Frequent riders of Pittsburgh's Three Rivers Heritage Trail will be excited to learn that a pair of troublesome gates were removed from the Chateau segment of the trail this week. The notoriously narrow gates have been replaced with new shiny white and green reflective posts.
In May 2015 Pittsburgh's Northside Bike/Ped Committee created a petition to remove these gates and replace them with reflective bollards. The petition received nearly 500 signatures, representing 48 Pittsburgh neighborhoods.
I went through those old rusty yellow gates hundreds of times, and each time it felt like there was a 50/50 chance I would clip my handlebar and faceplant. I was always reminded of the "Use the Force, Luke" scene from Star Wars. The new bollards make the trail much safer and are also a major visual improvement.
